Ending the year with sparkling wines. Our first year as wine club has been phenomenal and we are so happy to enjoy some bubbly with our amazing wine club. Our group today features Alan, B, Brandon, Carrol, Dib, Fran, John, Kelly, Ken, Marjorie, Naomi, Rico, and Yunlin. The sparkling wines we had were the Mas Vida Cava Brut, Barone Pizzini Satin 2014, Cremant De Loire, 2017 Domaine Carneros Late Disgorged Rose, Alfred Gratien Champagne, Valley De Mare (Nicholas Feuillatte Reserve Exclusive), and the Pol Roger Champagne.

The primary difference between sparkling wine and Champagne is the region of production. Champagne is a type of sparkling wine, but it can only be called "Champagne" if it comes from the Champagne region in France. Any wine made in France outside of Champagne is called Cremant. This is not just a semantic distinction; the name is legally protected under the rules of the appellation, which also dictate the grape varieties that can be used, the methods of production, and other aspects of viticulture and vinification. There are tons of sparkling wines with varying names across the world - Prosecco (Italy), Cava (Spain), Sekt (German & Austria) and more.

Champagne is made using a specific method known as the "traditional method" or "méthode champenoise," where the second fermentation (which creates the bubbles) occurs in the individual bottle. While many sparkling wines around the world also use this method, they cannot be labeled as Champagne. In summary, all Champagne is sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wine is Champagne. The distinction is based on geographic origin and, in the case of Champagne, specific production methods and standards.

Mas Vida Cava Brut ⭐⭐

Palate: As for the palate, the Mas Vida Cava Brut presents a structure that is simple as it doesn't delve into any notes of complexity. It has nice blend of peach and lemon notes, which then give way to the tartness of sour apple. There is also a salty character, consistent with the thread of minerality.

Overall Impression: This cava is an embodiment of simplicity, offering an accessible yet satisfying tasting experience. Its various elements, while straightforward, are balanced. Price - $13 USD - it is fair to note our ratings are on taste, not price value which all gave a 5/5.
